Freezing Canine Semen
نویسنده
چکیده
There are many reasons for freezing canine semen. Perhaps the most important reason is to preserve and insure the breeding potential of a dog against loss, death or infertility. This provides for the stud dog to sire puppies when he is no longer able to do so. Freezing semen also allows for the transport of genetic material both within and between countries. This obviously increases the marketing potential for stud dogs located in countries such as New Zealand where shipment of dogs to the northern hemisphere for mating is impractical, and likewise allows for the importation of genetic material into New Zealand from overseas, thereby increasing the gene pool. The use of frozen semen, rather than natural mating, also allows a dog to be used for several breedings on the same day and in different places.

Comparison between different dilution rates on canine semen freezing using Tris-buffer with the addition of egg-yolk and glycerol [Comparação entre diferentes diluições na congelação do sêmen canino utilizando o tampão tris acrescido de gema de ovo e glicerol]
Standardized sperm concentration and volume:volume extension were compared as dilution rates for canine semen freezing. Six proven stud dogs were submitted to two seminal collections by manual stimulation. Semen was evaluated and extended in tris plus egg-yolk and glycerol according to two different dilution rates. The first one was based on a standardized sperm concentration of 200x10 spermato...
متن کاملEffects of curcumin on canine semen parameters and expression of NOX5 gene in cryopreserved spermatozoa
Canine seminal plasma contains antioxidant enzymes to protect sperm against internally generated ROS. These enzymes are removed from seminal plasma during the process of cryopreservation. The freezing/thawing process can cause some morphological and functional changes via ice crystallization and osmolality imbalance. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of curcumin supplement...
متن کاملWater-induced hypo-osmotic test for the evaluation of canine sperm membrane integrity
The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency of the water test to evaluate the functional membrane integrity of ejaculated canine sperm after collecting, cooling, and freezing-thawing. Twenty-five ejaculates were obtained from 12 stud dogs by digital manipulation. Sperm-rich fractions were evaluated, diluted, cooled at 5oC and frozen-thawed. A conventional hypo-osmotic swelling t...
متن کاملCryopreservation of canine semen - new challenges.
Egg yolk (EY) protects cell membranes against cold shock, and it prevents or restores the loss of phospholipids from the membrane. EY has been widely used in semen extenders. It has been added to Tris-Glucose buffer and has been widely used for cooling and cryopreservation of canine semen. EY is not a defined entity, but a complex biological compound containing proteins, vitamins, phospholipids...
متن کاملArtificial Insemination in Dogs
In Artificial Insemination (AI) the semen is collected manually from a stud male and thereafter deposited (inseminated) in the female so that fertilization can occur in the absence of natural mating. Artificial Insemination, one of the earliest techniques for assisted reproduction in animals and humans, took longer to be implemented in dogs due to speciesspecific particularities. In past decade...
